Planning a Night Out at a Comedy Show When You Have Pets at Home

Leanne Morgan built her following with warm, observational stand-up about family life, marriage and the everyday chaos of running a household, and her tours have taken her to theatres across the country, including the historic F.M. Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. That January date has now passed, but if you are hoping to catch her or another touring comedian in future, the official venue and artist websites are the places to check for current dates and tickets. Buying from the official box office rather than a reseller is usually the safest route.

For those of us with rescue animals at home, an evening out takes a little extra planning. A comedy show can mean five or six hours away once you count travel, parking and the drive back, and newly adopted or anxious pets often notice the change in routine.

Before you leave

  • Walk and feed early. A good walk and an on-time dinner help most dogs settle for a quiet evening.
  • Leave something familiar. A worn T-shirt, a favourite blanket or a long-lasting chew can ease separation stress.
  • Keep it calm. Soft background noise, such as a radio, can mask outside sounds that might set off barking.
  • Secure the space. Recently adopted pets may test boundaries, so close off rooms with cords, trash or anything chewable.

If you will be gone a long time

Puppies, senior pets and animals with medical needs may not cope with a long stretch alone. A trusted neighbour, a friend who knows your pet, or a professional pet sitter can make a late night much easier for everyone. If you travel out of town for a show, book boarding or a sitter well ahead, as winter weekends can fill up.

New adopters often find that short practice absences in the first weeks make later evenings out far smoother. Our foster tips include more advice on helping a rescue adjust to a new routine, and you can read how other families managed the first months in our adoption stories.
