Walking the Riverwalk with a Dog: Practical Tips

The Sanford Riverwalk runs along the shore of Lake Monroe, and its wide, paved path makes it one of the easier places in Seminole County to take a newly adopted dog for a calm, structured walk. Open views and steady foot traffic give a shy rescue a chance to watch the world from a comfortable distance. Busier stretches near downtown let a more confident dog practise polite greetings.

Beat the Florida heat

Central Florida pavement can get hot enough to hurt paws, especially from late spring through early autumn. Plan walks for early morning or after sunset, and press the back of your hand to the path for a few seconds before setting out. If it is uncomfortable for you, it is too hot for your dog. Carry water and a collapsible bowl, because shade along the waterfront can be patchy.

Wildlife and the water's edge

Lake Monroe is part of the St. Johns River system, and like most Florida freshwater, it is home to alligators, wading birds and other wildlife. Keep dogs on a short leash near the shoreline and never let them drink from or wade into the lake. A sturdy, non-retractable leash gives you better control if a heron or a squirrel catches your dog's eye.

Making the most of event days

Markets and festivals bring crowds, music and food smells, which can overwhelm a dog still settling into a new home. Before bringing your pet, try a quiet weekday visit first. On busy days, keep outings short and watch for signs of stress such as panting, a tucked tail or pulling away. Bring waste bags and pick up after your dog every time. Clean paths help keep downtown welcoming to pets.

Thinking about adopting or fostering?

Meeting rescue groups at a downtown pop-up is a relaxed way to learn about animals looking for homes. If you are not ready to adopt, ask how fostering works, or browse dogs and cats currently looking for families on our adoption page. Event details can change, so confirm dates and times with the organisers before you go.
